8.3. State-confessional Relations

Track: 8. Culture. Education

Description

The session is going to discuss a number of issues related to the interaction of the state and religious denominations. This interaction has many aspects, as it is hard to imagine denominations existing independently of society and state. They manifest the feelings of their believers; they can communicate to the state the issues that the believers have to face in everyday secular life. They help resolve difficult situations in life, build a fully-fledged civil society and foster the notions of mutual understanding and tolerance. Therefore, denominations play a crucial role in consolidating civil society and promoting the feeling of mutual respect.

Denominations need the state as much as the state needs denominations. What are the legal grounds of the interaction and synergy between denominations and the state? What is the constitutional foundation of these legal relations?

The round table will also discuss the issues related to state support of denominations, including tax support of religious organizations and other state benefits. Legal matters of participation of religious denominations in preservation of cultural sites and heritage is also be covered. The issues of socially-oriented activity of religious organizations may also be discussed.

This session will focus primarily on establishing legal dialogue between the state and denominations. The discussion will only address legal aspects of the interaction between the state and denominations:

  • tax and other benefits;
  • support of socially-oriented activity of religious organizations;
