2.2. Artistic Image of Lawyer as a Driver for Evolution of the Profession: Why Lawyer did not Become the Hero of Our Time

Track: 2. Legal Profession

Description

What came first: a demanded job of a lawyer or its popular character? Who predates whom: a successful glossy lawyer from Hollywood movies or thousands of Wall Street lawyers similarly dressed in “thousand-dollar suits?” Does art find characters in real life, or rather does life imitate art? What is primary: an image that came to an artist’s mind or notions of good and evil formed in collective unconsciousness?

Why is a lawyer often a protagonist in American movies (he or she may be honest or not quite so, defending the Devil or an innocent kid, a billionaire CEO of a law firm or a poor activist), whereas in Russian movies it is a policeman?

How did it happen that the notion of a defender itself is different in our countries? Who is to blame for that: perhaps an artist who has imposed this notion on society or lawyers themselves?

And why has a lawyer failed to become a hero of our time?
